It’s all in the family for Debbie and Brett

With six children and 12 grandchildren under their belt, you can understand why having a home with plenty of space is important to Debbie and Brett.

When designing their new build, they thought long and hard about the layout, ensuring that they were able to fit all the rooms on their wishlist without compromising on space... including an open plan kitchen-living-dining area and courtyard garden perfect for family gatherings.

Finished with Resene Half Tea on the walls, and crisp Resene White on the high pitched ceilings, their home is beautiful and welcoming, with a lovely country lodge feel.

Debbie tells us more about the project.

What Resene colours and products have you used?

The whole house interior was painted in Resene Half Tea. I have used this colour before in previous homes, and have always loved it. I looked and tested other colours, and after numerous testpots, came back again to my favourite Resene Half Tea. It’s a fabulous colour, not too brown, grey or green. It provides a nice crisp contrast to the white ceilings and architraves in Resene White.

How did you decide on the overall look of the interiors?

In the main living area we wanted large open light spaces with a country lodge look. We achieved this with high, pitched ceilings using the look of ‘rafters’ to give it the country feel and sense of space. A space in which we could have large gatherings when all of our family is together – six children and 12 grandchildren!

What part of the house are you happiest with?

The kitchen that my wonderful husband made. The style is classic and the layout works so well. I just love it!

What is your advice for someone trying to achieve a similar look?

Use neutral natural tones on the walls, linens and textures for furnishings, and natural wood and cane furniture with jute rugs for floors.

What was the biggest challenge for this project?

Getting all the spaces on our wishlist into our home without compromising the sizes of the rooms. Also giving us the outlook from our living area out onto the neighbouring green belt.

How did you find working with Resene paint and colours?

Resene paint always gives a great finish and the range of neutrals is wonderful.

Is there anyone you would like mentioned in the article?

We were very lucky with all of the people working on our project. The builder fully understood our ideas and the designer was able to turn my rough drawings into reality. Both the builder and the designer understood our feature ideas of the rafter ceiling, feature brickwork and chimney. And of course, I had the best man for the job creating my kitchen – my husband!

The spare bedroom is also painted in Resene Half Tea, which gets its fair share of sunlight during the day. They've gone brighter with colour here, introducing blues and greens through bedware and accessories, showing the versatility of this particular Resene colour.

The bathroom carries on the country lodge theme, painted in Resene Half Tea and Resene White. The large gilt mirror is a gorgeous touch.
