Shed makeover houses new rural lifestyle

A rural Waikato shed has been transformed into a stylish country home thanks to the vision of its owners. Having owned the land for several years, while they lived in town, the couple decided renovating the existing shed into a house offered the best opportunity to make the switch to a rural life.

The homeowners talks us through the process.

What Resene colours have you used and why?

We used Resene Black White on the interiors. It was important to be able to maximise the small space by putting a colour on the walls that didn’t make it feel smaller and more enclosed. The bedroom in Resene Seaweed was purely for fun. As the house isn’t long-term, we wanted to bring some personality into the room. The exterior is Resene Ironsand. The Resene colours are beautiful. They transformed the place and made it come to life.

How did you decide the overall look of the interiors? What was your overall philosophy?

Because the space is small, we wanted it to feel like a home but without clutter. Using the space well was a big priority, as was fitting in our favourite pieces of furniture. The flow was important, so we made the house work well for what we need for now. Soft, industrial, Hamptons are what we love as they’re comfortable and give a real sense of home. This is how we tried to make the space feel for us.

What part of the house are you most happy with?

The outdoor bath and the Resene Seaweed wall. Just because they’re different and add some character.

What is your advice for someone trying to achieve a similar look?

Make the layout a priority. Once you have that, the space is much more functional and easier to live in. Using white with contrasting details makes it feel bigger and more like a home.

What was the biggest challenge for this project?

Time! We sold and had to build in six weeks. Having the vision come to life was challenging too, as it wasn’t a typical build.
